WHAT IS GOOD DAIRY FARMING PRACTICE?

GDFP  is the foundation for producing milk that meets the highest standards of the food sector and consumers. The farm ensures the safety and suitability of milk and milk products by implementing GDFP, which is contained in international standards of practice such as the principles of food hygiene (CAC/RCP 1- 1969, Rev. 4, 2003) and the Codex Code of Hygienic Practice for Milk and Milk Products (CAC/RCP 57-2004).

The primary goal of adopting GDFP is to produce safe, high-quality milk from healthy animals utilizing management techniques that are sustainable in terms of animal welfare, social, economic, and environmental factors. To attain this goal, dairy producers should use best practices in animal health, milking cleanliness, nutrition (feed and water), animal welfare, the environment, and socioeconomic management.

GDFP adopts the concepts included in these guidelines that pertain to the production of milk on farms. It acknowledges that dairy farmers are an important part of the larger dairy food production and processing chain, and that all participants in the chain, including dairy farmers, suppliers to dairy farmers, milk carriers and haulers, dairy product and food manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers, should be part of an integrated food safety and quality assurance management system. Dairy farmers can help by ensuring that excellent dairy production practices are followed on their farms. GDFP also assures that the milk is produced by healthy animals in a sustainable and responsible way in terms of animal welfare, social, economic, and environmental considerations. Implementing appropriate dairy farming methods is thus smart risk management for the dairy farming enterprise's immediate and long term prospects.
