ISO 9001 Revision: From Wait to Reality!
published at - 21 May 2024

Great news for quality management professionals! After a period of anticipation, the revision of the ISO 9001 standard is officially underway. This marks a significant step forward in ensuring the standard remains relevant and effective for today's businesses.

Following extensive discussions and industry input, ISO committee TC 176 has initiated the revision of the ISO 9001 standard. This marks a significant step forward in ensuring the quality management standard remains relevant and effective.

The revision process began with a successful first meeting of experts in London (December 4-8, 2023). Currently, an internal ballot is open for commenting on the draft document (Committee Draft).

Here a quick screening of the main proposed changes compared to the 2015 version:

The title is now “Quality management systems — Requirements with guidance for use”

Lot of definitions have been added – replacing the reference to 9000.

New subclauses have been added:

1. 4.2 c) which of these requirements will be addressed through the quality management system.

2. 6.3 e) how the effectiveness of the change will be monitored;

3. 6.3 f) how to review of the results of the change.

4. 10.1 b) addressing future needs and expectations;

Total rewording of 10.3, requiring identifying opportunities and taking actions to:

1. improving products and services to meet requirements as well as to address future needs and expectations;

2. correcting, preventing or reducing undesired effects;

3. improving the performance and effectiveness of the quality management system.

New title for Annex A, which is now “Guidance on the use of this international standard” and incorporating (40 pages) the full ISO TS 9002 implementation guidelines (to which Didier BLANC also contributed).

The revision of ISO 9001 takes a significant step towards a more streamlined approach. The standard will become self-contained, encompassing relevant definitions and implementation guidelines.

Following the current internal commenting phase on the Committee Draft (CD), the next milestone is the transition to Draft International Standard (DIS). This will be accompanied by a public consultation period expected in the first or second quarter of 2025.
